Generate Upcycle is a leader in sustainable waste-to-value solutions. Our Canadian portfolio includes two locations in Ontario – a pre-processing facility in Drumbo and an anaerobic digester in London. Together, these facilities process more than 140,000 metric tonnes (mt) of food waste and provide custom food waste management solutions for municipalities and industrial, commercial and institutional (ICI) organizations. Anaerobic Digestion – A sustainable option for food waste.

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a biological process by which microbes break down organic matter. Generate Upcycle uses wet AD technology to harness this natural process producing renewable energy and organic fertilizers from food waste, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and returning valuable nutrients to the soil.

Anaerobic digesters are built systems (lagoons or tanks) where organic materials can decompose in an oxygen-free environment. Systems range in capabilities and technology. They can be wet or dry, low- or high-temperature, and single- or multi-stage.

Renewable Natural Gas

Generate Upcycle advances the circular economy by producing renewable natural gas (RNG) from food waste.

RNG is a carbon-neutral (or negative) fuel derived from decomposing organic waste. It is chemically identical to fossil-fuel derived natural gas but sustainably produced.

By partnering with municipalities, energy providers, and commercial companies, we help reduce their carbon footprint, meet regulatory requirements, and achieve their sustainability goals.

The London, Ontario digester is the largest commercial food waste anaerobic digester in North America and has the capacity to produce up to 600,000 Gigajoules (GJ) of RNG per year. The RNG is delivered through pipeline injections, and is used to heat homes, as well as power transportation.

Our London facility is enrolled in Canada’s Clean Fuel Regulations, and generates carbon credits.
